In line
with the country’ information and communication technology (ICT) master plan
and vision 2010, ICT application have become an important part of teaching and learning.
Every aspect of human life is getting squeezed by the computer and therefore,
the use of computers in education has also become more dominant. We are now
said to be in a time of change from industrial age to the information age.
Therefore, the use of information technology should not be strange anymore in
education. The Ministry of education has invested a huge effort in terms of
funding and training to equip teachers and students with ICT skills. However,
there are some issues and challenge integrating ICT in teaching and learning in
our Malaysian schools.
The biggest challenge would be not all students had
the opportunities to be exposed to the ICT. This is because in our country some
of the citizens still do not have computer at home due to the poor family
background. They cannot learn the basic to use the ICT equipment at home so
when they go to school it would be difficult for them to get used with the
technology. Although they were taught to use the ICT at school, they cannot
practice what they have learned in their school at their house. This is such as
a waste when the students forgot what they have learned.
Moreover, teachers do not have enough skills in
teaching the students using the ICT with particular application. Not all
teachers are expert in using the ICT especially the senior teachers. Most of
them do not use ICT in their teaching because they not have been exposed to the
technology during their study time compare to the fresh graduated teachers. ICT
are evolving technologies so the most expert ICT teachers need to continuously upgrade
their skills and keep update of the latest developments. This is important so
that the teachers can delivered their knowledge and skills effectively to the
students in learning the ICT.
Other than that, another issue in integrating ICT
in teaching and learning in Malaysian school is the lack of appropriate rooms
and building for ICT learning. Not all school is provided with all this ICT
facilities and if they have it is not enough for them. Although some school
have all those facilities but it happen that they do not fully used what the
government have prepared. This may lead to the damage to the ICT equipment. The
government will spend a lot of money to repair the damaged. If these problems
cannot be solved effectively, this may result in huge loss to the country
because the government has invested a lot of money on it.
There are several ways to overcome this problem. First, teachers should
understand their student ability and try to help the students to learn
ICT. This is because some student lack of self confidents. So the
teachers need to increase their student confidence and motivation to learn ICT.
Other than that, teachers need to learn and be
given adequate skills to use ICT equipment in an efficient and effective
manner. If the teacher itself cannot master the skills of using ICT, the
learning objective cannot be achieved. Next, the government should provide
enough facilities to make sure all the schools have complete ICT equipment.
So,the students can have the best practise using the technology.
In conclusion, integrating ICT in school may
have some issues and challenges but we must try our best to solved the issues.
This is because implementing ICT in the education is a good way to increase the
development in Malaysia.
